The short answer

Xbox became a continuing relationship, not a box replaced every generation.

The platform’s history is a sequence of expanded capabilities paired with new dependencies. Network identity enabled persistent communities; digital distribution widened routes to publication; compatibility preserved selected access; subscriptions and cloud execution separated “can I play?” from simple physical possession.

Five lenses for reading the history

  1. Hardware. Each machine set local technical constraints, but later services made the device only one layer.
  2. Identity. Accounts connected purchases, saves, family controls and enforcement across time.
  3. Distribution. Discs, digital stores and subscriptions created different acquisition and continuity risks.
  4. Execution. Local console play, PC programs, remote play and provider cloud execution depend on different machines.
  5. Institutions. Publishing decisions, acquisitions, worker conditions and regulation affect which games and services persist.

History needs state labels

An announcement is not an implementation; a proposal can be reversed; a transaction can be completed while its consequences remain disputed. The 2013 Xbox One reversal is the clearest opening case. For current consequences, move from context to library access.
